According to an exclusive repot brought to the Hollywood Reporter, Disney is bring yet another ride to the big screen, with a film adaptation of Space Mountain.

This ride, which exists at both of Disney’s staple US parks, is beloved by millions for its unique Tomorrowland aesthetic and enjoyable experience.

According to the Reporter’s article, available here, Disney Studios has Joby Harold currently hired, who is known for his scripts, generally Warner Bros. related.

Harold is expected to write the script for the upcoming film, a live-action adaptation of Space Mountain, as well as produce with his partner and wife Tory Tunnell. They’re producing under their banner Safehouse Pictures. THR also furthers by saying Rideback, run by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will also be involved. This group was behind the one billion dollar Aladdin megahit.

Currently, not much information is known about the project, other than the result will be a live-action film, scheduled for release in theaters, described as a family adventure.

The interesting part about this entire scenario, is that Space Mountain does not have an overarching story, or even a general plot.

Space Mountain is an indoor roller coaster, themed towards space, with visuals of stars and rocket ships. First introduced to Walt Disney World in Florida in 1975, the ride was placed in Magic Kingdom Park’s Tomorrowland section. Not long after, the ride was installed in Disney’s other United States park, Disneyland in 1977. Throughout the following couple of decades, the ride was installed in other Disney parks, eventually becoming present in five of six global Disney parks. As mentioned earlier, there is not much of an overarching story for Space Mountain, due to there being no story or characters.

This one specific detail means that the story for the movie will have Space Mountain exclusively as an inspiration, with no real plot or story derived from the ride.

This film would follow other park ride adaptations that Disney has been pursuing recently. The biggest difference would be the lack of an overarching story or plot, compared to some past adaptations.

While this would hardly be the first ride-to-film transition, through the last two or so decades, Disney has released films based on the following attractions:

  • The Haunted Mansion
  • The Country Bear Jamboree
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Tower of Terror
  • Tomorrowland (as a whole)
  • Dinosaur
  • and Mission to Mars

This would make a Space Mountain adaptation the eighth ride to film leap.

Harold is currently working for Disney, with the development of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, which will be exclusively available on Disney+. He serves as the writer and executive producer of the series, and also received an executive producer credit for John Wick: 3.
