January’s PlayStation Plus games were just announced a few days ago, which Statural covered here, although it seems like Sony is already offering refunds for one of the games. While it doesn’t seem like this refund applies to all three games, it is reported to have been offered to owners of the PS5 game Maneater.
According to a random Reddit post by @braewhyit, a person who bought the now PS+ game Maneater last year, is said to have been refunded their money and received an email from Sony.
The message said
“As a subscriber of PlayStation Plus, we will refund the purchase price of this product to your PlayStation Store wallet as this is a PlayStation Plus monthly game. This will not affect your ability to play the game as we have not removed the game from your library.”
According to that message, since @braewhyit is a PlayStation Plus member, and received January’s Maneater as part of the subscription, they received a refund for their previous purchase of Maneater. As they had purchased the game in November of the year prior, they obviously had no clue that they would get the game for free, two months later.
Since they had the game purchased digitally, Sony could just take the digital copy they already owned “away,” and just give them access to January’s PS5 Maneater version.
The only issue with this post, is that there’s no way to verify it. I haven’t seen any other example of someone getting Maneater refunded if they previously owned it. Since there’s no real precedent for this kind of situation, we’ll have to wait and see if more people report situations like this.
While @braewhyit has no reason to lie about it, they didn’t provide any proof. No screenshots, emails, receipts, documents, or links were provided to prove that this happened, and so there’s a chance that this never did in fact happen.

Whether or not these refunds are actually happening, it would realistically only occur for a small percentage of people that had previously bought Maneater, and for PS5 specifically. That’s also only for one game, a PS5 version exclusive, completely ignoring the other two great games coming to PS+ for the month.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Greedfall are still available on PS4 alongside Maneater on PS5, even if you can’t receive a refund if you previously owned one.
