Thanks to a China re-release, James Cameron’s Avatar has retaken the #1 grossing film spot, again beating Endgame for the #1 spot.
Avatar has officially become the #1 highest grossing film of all time, again. Again. James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster film met a new all-time box office record this week, beating out Avengers: Endgame, which had a total $2.7902 billion last year.
Thanks to a Chinese rerelease of Avatar however, the film has enough extra gross to push its box office total to $2.798 billion, a full $7.8 million above Endgame. With that extra boost from China, Disney wins again against itself, reclaiming the #1 spot.
This random boost to Avatar’s gross comes as China’s theaters fill with eager theatregoers, desperate to watch films as the country reopens. Apparently though, Avatar is a favorite of the Chinese, likely one of the few Western films left available in these theaters, since new films haven’t released.
With this gain, Avatar will likely retain the top spot over Endgame, at least for the next few weeks, as part of the continued fight between films for the #1 box office gross spot. Endgame for example, was rereleased by Disney several times in an attempt to bolster the film’s results to have a #1 film.
Even with that Disney powered film push, they still hold several of the top spots, including both #1 and #2. Disney obviously owns Marvel, which produced Endgame, but they also own Fox, which had produced Avatar, meaning that they both belong to the House of Mouse.
There’s still a chance that Endgame will retake #1 however, as Disney will likely use the Marvel fanbase’s need for the film to be #1 to gain a few extra million from the film. Since many don’t realize that Disney owns Avatar and Endgame, the company can likely pit them back and forth against each other with rereleases, in order to get a few million off of box office sales.

The funny part of all of this, is the warring groups. Avatar and Endgame fanbases are fighting amongst each other over who deserves the #1 spot, and Disney is congratulating itself, with a post from Marvel towards Avatar’s official Twitter.
