Worldwide Mac shipments were up a lot in the fourth quarter of 2020, according to research firm Gartner’s worldwide PC vendor shipment estimates. That report said that Apple shipped 6.9 million Macs during Q4, up from 5.25 million the year before. Therefore, Apple marked a 31% growth over the year, bringing their total market share to 8.7%.

Apple kept their number 4 spot in the worldwide list, behind Lenovo, HP, and Dell, with market shipments of 27 million, 20 million, and 17 million. While Apple’s around ⅓ of Lenovo’s total, they’re growing at a faster pace, and might catch up soon. There was growth across the board, excluding HP’s -2.9% growth, but Apple’s 31% was still three times the average 10.7% gain.

Moving into local statistics, Apple was still number 4, holding a 14.3% market share, up from 13%. The company shipped 2.7 million PCs, up from 2 million, but still behind HP, Dell, and Lenovo’s PC totals within the States. Apple recorded the second highest growth, at 32%, just behind Lenovo’s 41% growth. Every other major seller marked 10%+ growth, excluding HP again.

It’s assumed that Apple’s major growth during Q4 is due to one major reason: Apple’s M1 chipset. The chipset, which we covered here, was a huge endeavor for Apple, marking their first non-Intel processor. These units are more power-efficient, graphic heavy, performance heavy, and well-heated, making ASM1 one of the best chipsets ever.

The massive improvement of ASM1 over previous Intel chipsets, was a huge buy point for consumers, alongside the decreased price tag, as a result of the in-house development. M1 is honestly really great.

Alongside Gardner’s report, IDC released their own estimates as well, showing even greater growth for Apple. IDC estimated 7.4 million Macs shipped, up from 4.9 million, marking a 49.2% growth compared to Gartner’s 31% estimate.

The reason as to why these two estimates vary, is due to the fact that they’re estimates. Apple doesn’t release sales information until a quarterly report, but usually these estimates are relatively accurate. The company doesn’t provide unit sales for the iPhone, iPad, or Mac anymore, but these estimates are still really accurate to Apple’s undisclosed number.
